Factual Divergence and Risk Perceptions

چکیده

The communication of information (‘facts’) by experts to the general public becomes challenging if there is an absence trust in experts, and institutions they represent. There has been a perceived sense decline expertise science, issue concern highlighted political leaders such as MP Michael Gove Former US President Donald Trump. This paper presents synthesis differing fields study reflect upon dynamic between expertise, risk response democratic practice. It incorporates studies theories from psychology, analysis, communication, epistemology answer questions as: what evidence that antipathy toward exists? Is war being waged laypeople does this mean for policy? How can perception research effectively contribute debate on expertise? role heuristics psychology decision-making explored (as well brief sojourn into sociology risk) with regard how perceptions are formed, play dynamic. In article, I argue reports not based evidence; fact, scientists generally trusted at large. However, cannot be taken granted it continues represent increasingly critical element communicating upholding principles governance.

Examining Resident Perceptions of Negative Gambling Impacts with Factual Evidence

This study attempts to establish a dialogue between perceived negative impacts associated with borrowing money to gamble and the resulting bankruptcies in three ways: matching local resident opinions with evidence they are asked to provide; determining causal effects of evidence on perceptions; and confirming the bankruptcy issues by using historical data. The results of the study are mixed. On...

The risk of divergence

We present infinite extensive strategy profiles with perfect information and we show that replacing finite by infinite changes the notions and the reasoning tools. The presentation uses a formalism recently developed by logicians and computer science theoreticians, called coinduction. This builds a bridge between economic game theory and the most recent advance in theoretical computer science a...

Dating divergence of Polystigma and other Sordariomycetes

Studies on the evolutionary history of ascomycetes in terms of time scale will help to understand historical patterns that shape their biodiversity. Until now most of dating studies of ascomycetes have focused on major events in fungal evolution but not on divergence events within smaller groups of fungi e.g. within Sordariomycetes. We used molecular dating to estimate the time of separation of...

Information, Divergence and Risk for Binary Experiments

We unify f -divergences, Bregman divergences, surrogate loss bounds (regret bounds), proper scoring rules, matching losses, cost curves, ROC-curves and information. We do this by systematically studying integral and variational representations of these objects and in so doing identify their primitives which all are related to cost-sensitive binary classification. As well as clarifying relations...

Multiclass Classification, Information, Divergence, and Surrogate Risk

We provide a unifying view of statistical information measures, multi-class classificationproblems, multi-way Bayesian hypothesis testing, and loss functions, elaborating equivalenceresults between all of these objects. In particular, we consider a particular generalization off -divergences to multiple distributions, and we show that there is a constructive equivalencebetwee...
